Sorry to ask, I am relatively new to battling and stuff. My question is this, if I have a Pokemon that is pretty even in it's defensive base stats and want to maximize it's bulk, do I put loads of EVs into it's HP stat? Like, say defense and special defense are equal at base, I decide actually I already have one more specially defensive wall and one that copes well with most physical threats, if I want to balance this guy and make him able to sponge stuff and not worry what set it comes up against too much, do I go 252 HP? Or do I go 252 D 252 SD 4 HP and leave no attacking investment what so ever because the base stat for special attack is already like 120?
I know that's a lot of writing, and it may not even make sense very well, but if someone could reply and just help me understand I'd really appreciate it!

Just to clarify, the Pokemon you have has base 120 special attack, has its defenses for the most part evenly balanced, you already have special defense and a physical defense wall on your team and you want to make it a overall wall?
I feel like this is a Rotom-W or some other form. But anyways, you would invest in it's HP for sure, 252. Then, it all depends on the Pokemon.
If the Pokemon has mostly offensive moves (either 3/4 or 4/4 attacking moves) you should put the rest to special attack to make it a bulky special sweeper.
If the Pokemon has support moves (toxic, heal bell, thunder wave etc) you should either a) evenly distribute the 252 into defense and special defense or b) if its base speed is at least 80, give the rest to speed.
You can mix and match, but first 252 HP, then give it offensive EV's for power, Speed EV's for fast support, or defensive EV's for bulk.

This was really helpful, thank you very much!
It wasn't a Rotom though, it was a Mega Venusaur, I was looking at move sets and my team and stuff and thought that using it as a bulky sweeper type thing would be cool, doubt it will be a project iI undertake as of now, maybe later but it seems like a good Pokemon to use ^.^
As for it's moves, I thought of Leaf Storm (egg move) Sludge Bomb or Venoshock depending on what else is on my team (I have a toxic spikes lead in mind) Roar and I'm undecided on the fourth slot as of yet. Possibly Growth to give it a boost but I'm unsure.
Thanks very much!

In general, the phrase "it depends" holds true in all aspect of life, really. This is so with Pokemon. If you are playing in-game, then it really does not matter too much. Only in the Battle Maison and other similar battle situations, would you really need EV and IV trained Pokes. However, metagame is totally different. I suggest checking out websites like Smogon University to try and learn all of the basics of EV's and how to distribute them. Smogon also has a complete Strategy Pokedex. Although the metagame has "evolved" (haha! i so funnies) since it was first created, Smogon is a great place to start. Once you have a grasp of current trends and an understanding of what works for each Pokemon, you will have to be more creative so your opponent cannot just predict you are using a standard Smogon set Pokemon.

Thanks :) I've used Smogon to see what they list as sets and EV spreads etc before, I'm just trying to test my knowledge without depending on Smogon and stuff at the moment cos I really want to learn more about metagame ^.^ thank you though, I may check it out, though it is a new Pokemon technically so I dunno if it'll be up yet!
Thanks!
