Wasn't sure whether to put this in the Gen IV board or here considering I'm currently going to be referring to HeartGold but I will be doing this on Gen III and V too so I suppose here is the best place to discuss it. Now, there might be some minor spoilers... nothing too serious I would imagine, but you've been warned nonetheless.
I have decided to have a go at soft-resetting for some shiny legendaries. I've never tried it before so I'm a little wary as to where to save. Currently right before the Ho-oh battle in HeartGold and I currently have it saved before speaking to the Kimono Girls and the cut-scene where Ho-oh shows up. Is that the right place to save, or can I save right before interacting with Ho-oh when his sprite is on screen?
Also, I wondered about the roaming legendaries... is their shiny status determined on the first encounter? So if the first time I encounter, for example, Suicune in battle should I reset and try again?
Lastly, am I right in thinking that the only encounterable (non-event) legendary pokemon from Gen III-VI that cannot be shiny are Zekrom and Reshiram, and Yveltal, Xerneas, and Zygarde?
Will probably keep this thread alive over time by getting advice on the best places to save to soft reset against particular pokemon.

For Ho-Oh your best bet is to simply go though one encounter and see if you can save before the actual battle. As long as you save before you're actually IN the battle I think you're safe. You'll never actually see a Shiny Pokemon overworld sprite (not until capture anyway)
As for Roaming Pokémon, it's the first encounter that matters, so soft reset after that first encounter. If you see it shiny once and it flees, the next time you see it'll be shiny still (also have the same nature, IVs, ect)
Now to Shiny Locked Pokemon, which to be honest annoyed me as I was going to go for some in Gen 6, sadly Mewtwo and Legendary Bird Trio cannot be shiny ether. As for previous gens I wouldn't know, as to be honest I only really started "shiny hunting" in Gen 6 once the odds were lower.
I hope I helped you a bit there, and good luck with your hunting!

I did a little experiment... I am literally one tile in front of the Ho-oh sprite after the cutscene. This is where I saved. I caught Ho-oh and then checked the nature and stats, reset, and caught it again to see if they changed. They did. That would make me believe that you can save directly in front of the sprite and just keep entering the battle and soft resetting until a shiny appears... it is, however, and incredibly long and laborious chore. As for Mewtwo and the Legendary Birds... whether they can appear in X and Y as shiny, I don't know... but they can most certainly be shiny. As you can see from below, Mewtwo's shiny is green. Articuno and Zapdos are fairly subtle changes in the shade of blue and yellow, while Moltres looks sunburned. But if they are shiny locked in X and Y then these would need to be traded via Pokemon Bank... when it decides to show its face. Mewtwo

It's long and boring indeed, but worth it to know you got a legit shiny Ho-Oh!
Those are pretty, but more than likely from people who caught them shiny on FR/LG and transferred them over with bank. (or maybe hacked them in some way)

I tried to soft reset for Zygarde in Pokémon X, but after 600+ SRs I gave up. It really is a tedious process, and you have to have the right mind-set and determination to see it through. I've also started to "Shiny Hunt" this generation since new mechanics to catching shiny Pokémon make it a lot easier, and I was able to understand the Poké Radar this generation. It really is worth it in the end though.
I don't see why the Trio, or Mewtwo for that matter, can't be shiny?

(or maybe hacked them in some way) I have heard of several people who have confirmed soft resetting for a shiny Mewtwo in X and Y. Not heard anything regarding the legendary birds though but if Mewtwo is able to be shiny then I wouldn't see why they aren't also able. Also, the images I posted were from Serebii.net and they have been on there for a while, certainly before the Bank was opened. Possibly hacked but somehow I doubt it.

The reason why they could not be shiny (Unless Ben proves me wrong, which in a way I really hope he does) is because they're shiny locked. Meaning they've been programmed to never be encountered as a Shiny. This is what I assume Zygarde is programmed to do also, hence why you wasn't able to encounter it shiny. I guess you're lucky you gave up when you did rather than going for 8,000 plus encounters! It's long and boring indeed, but worth it to know you got a legit shiny Ho-Oh! So you know people who have actually found a Shiny Mewtwo in X and Y? The thing that throws me off is the lack of Youtube videos. Shiny hunting is of course so big on Youtube, I'm shocked no one has encountered (even by accident) one of these Pokémon shiny and not documented it. As for Serebii, I think the rest of the Shiny Pokemon sprites were added when Japan got Bank. Infact, if I recall it was a little after Japan got Bank. For me personally it will have to be something I see before I believe it, but if you can get one of the people you know to show us the Mewtwo with the Karlos symbol on it that'd be great. I actually hope you are onto something as I planned to Shiny Hunt for Mewtwo myself!

The Serebii images have been online since November I believe, before the Japanese Bank came out.
Unless I've been BS'ed of course. I'd do it myself but I'm still resetting for Ho-Oh and I barely have the patience for that...
