Why would you want a second one?

I did it a slightly strange way... I had a GameBoy Advance, and then I bought a DS Lite specifically because it was the last DS model to support GBA games so I could trade between Gen III. Then I only decided to buy a 3DS when I saw the need to be able to trade between Gen IV and V. So the only reason I could see for buying a second 3DS is if you really have nobody else you can trade with and you feel you need to trade. But even then it's a lot of money just for trading and shiny hunting. When I was doubling up I was also upgrading to the next gen console so it wasn't as bad.
One downside I can think of is that I believe you can only register your Nintendo Network ID to one 3DS console... but its whether that doesn't bother you at all or you see that as a negative point.

I happen to own 3 3DS systems, I got the original 3DS, but then they brought out the exclusive Pikachu 3DS XL here in the UK, so I got that for Christmas... but then they brought the X Y exclusives XLs, so I decided to get a Red one more as a collector, plus the screen the Pikachu one was a bit scratched.
So I never really had a motive to buy another 3DS for any game related reasons, purely for wanting an upgrade.
But I have found that it has it's perks:
1. Shiny hunting is obviously more easier in X and Y, more 3DS playing Pokémon, more encounters, more chances of getting a shiny. 2. One can have it's own exclusive friends list, like one can be for random people you meet on forums and another for close friends. 3. You can trade with yourself, kind of standard... but with Pokémon Bank coming out soon that wont be needed soon.
So, it really depends on if YOU need it. The more reasons you can think of to own two, the more it'll be worth your money.
