So, with the rumors going around about Pokemon Plus and Minus, people (including me) have been jokingly suggesting that plusle and minun will/should be the mascots, which made me wonder: would you guys ever want Gamefreak to go back to its roots and make the starter pokemon of that gen the version mascot for the games? Or do you guys prefer the legendaries to be in the spotlight? I personally wouldn't mind the change at all :D

Personally, I think I would rather have the legendary be the mascot. For one thing, I think it comes down to drawing interest in the game but not revealing too much. For Pokemon X, I tried to stay away from spoilers until I played the game, and even though I knew that Xerneas was the mascot legendary, I still didn't know much about it, so it kept things interesting. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see my starter frog evolve into a ninja frog. While I like Greninja, I personally wouldn't want the final evolution of my starter spoiled by the game's cover.

Plus the tendency is for there to be only two games, and later a third (barring Black 2/White 2). There tends to be paired legendary pokemon in each release, excluding Gen I, although there is a case for Mew and Mewtwo, maybe, but Mew was a secret at the time. And then the third game is a single, more elusive legendary pokemon. If they were to show starter pokemon it would mean leaving one starter out. It only really worked in Gen I because for some reason Pokemon Green in Japan became Pokemon Blue everywhere else. But I only knew that much later when the internet was more popular... I didn't understand at the time why Venusaur seemed to have been ignored.
So among all that stating the obvious... my point is it just makes more sense to do it the way they do.

Those are 2 really good points. Thinking about it now, it would make the promotion of the games extremely difficult since most often the legendaries are used to attract people to the games. It definitely would be a new experience to know absolutely nothing about the legendaries until you actually meet them in the game, but that would mean that one of the starters would have to be excluded from the first 2 versions, which would probably upset many.

I could totally see them going a different route and making three games with the mascots being one of three starters. Like Pokemon "Fire, Water, Grass" Versions. More money, more options.

I can see what above posts mean about using the legendary Pokémon to draw in attention, and not wanting the starters to be spoiled, but I see it a little different.
I think it would be cool if they kept the legendary Pokémon hidden until the last moment, a bit like the legendary trio of Red and Blue, you could just be exploring a cave, power plant or mansion and then there they are!
Maybe little some NPC dialog here and there hinting towards these big creatures, but you have no idea where or what they'll be like.
Unlike the starters where everyone loves them, but will eventually and quickly know exactly what they are. Even GameFreak themselves reveled the final evolutions the at the first day of X and Y.
I feel like if anything was going to work as an eye catch and but not a big enough spoiler, it'd be the final evolution starters.

Or. We make use of characters. Like make an awesome looking character as the front of each. That way no pokemon are revealed? :o

Not a bad idea, but I think if you're going to have a Pokémon game... it should really have, y'know, a Pokémon on the front of it.
Maybe like an NPC Trainer and the 3 starters...

Having legendaries in front of the covers already feels like a custom. If they were to change it into the starters or their evolution instead, many people might be confused (for me). Of course there's also the third version, but there are already three starters so it doesn't work out as a "surprise" version. Although in this case, maybe they'll do six starters or something like in Gen VI that I haven't played... Besides, if the starters were to be Plusle and Minun, they already had their chance in Rangers and a third version may have to be related to math operations. XD
Legendaries do attract people, but the idea of not knowing what the legendary Pokémon looks like is interesting as well. I was thinking that they could put a slightly shaded/covered Legendary on the cover to still make it look hidden, like the screen before the main menu in D/P/Platinum, but still viewable in small parts. I don't know if that will make them seem boring or interesting. Opinions?

I liked the fact of not knowing what legendary pokemon was ahead of me. Leaves me wondering what pokemon are left out there and what not. If I already know who the legendary pokemon is before I already get the game.. Then I'm really biased to which game I picked and didn't even give the other version a chance.
