I've only ever had 3 shinies in my entire Pokemon career. I don't have the patience for any method of yours Jay, I'm a busy man ;P

one thing that may make this a little easier is to use a aegislash as your false swiper since being ghost type prevents shinies from taking recoil from takedown

Isn't tipping people also rumored to increase the overall chance of finding shiny Pokemon? I've found five without even trying, and only two of them were from the friend safari. (Ironically, one of them was Illumise, Volbeat's counterpart.)

I heard about that somewhere... no idea if tipping acctually does make a differance but i hatched my shiny eevee after i just started tipping (still took 135 eggs but..)

Yeah, I've also heard of sporadically appearing shinies right after tipping anyone, although I think it's never happened to me. But the fact that I've encountered five without trying, and four of them I know didn't happen right after tipping, would suggest in increases the overall chances, for those of you who think it only works right after tipping someone. Before I realized tipping possibly helped, I would always tip when asked, since I was rich, and would mostly pay max and sometimes medium amount. Then I start finding shinies and wondered what the heck was going on. I've been playing Pokemon for over 12 years, and it took me 8 to find my first shiny...now that this is going on, I'm just like, "Explain this--". That's exactly what happened when I found my fourth shiny, Illumise. I wasn't screaming my head off. I was just like, "Another shiny?? What is this?" I was hardly impressed. I really don't know whether to look at this shiny thing as positive or negative. I guess positive if I feel so good about having a shiny mega Ampharos before anyone else. (I found it within 3 days of the game's release.)

I don't know if this makes any difference but I have spent the past 2 hours in friend safaris with no result what so ever. However, all the friend safaris I have registered are by people who are practically never online (in fact they are online so infrequently that only one of my friends has their characters appearance registered) and haven't unlocked their third safari pokemon.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the chances of encountering a shiny in the friend safari is higher if both parties are online at the time. No idea if this is true.
So here is my proposal, before I come to the conclusion that shiny pokemon are a worldwide conspiracy to make me waste my life running backwards and forth through a patch of grass. My FC is 1349-5677-2404. If someone wants to add me and I will see if I happen to chance upon a shiny pokemon while we are online at the same time. Also, it would be nice to know what pokemon are in my safari.
Also, what is other people's experience of friend safaris where 1) the friend is not online and 2) the safari has only two pokemon available.

Well there's that theory swiftly trounced.
Would still be interested to know which pokemon I carry in my safari.

All are completely valid questions :) I havn't found that being online or offline increases my chances at catching shinies more or less - in fact most of the time I'm usually offline. I have heard that if both parties are online theres an increased chance too, but I've never purposefully tested this - I will be doing though! in regards to the chances of finding shinies when the person has just 2 pokemon, again, I havn't noticed any difference and I've caught shinies when the person has had 2 and 3. I'd love some official input as to whether these things increase chances, at this stage I guess its all speculation.

I always wonder how many times people have to change the safari before they encounter a shiny with this method. It would be very interesting to see, I think.

Jay, what is the purpose of the second Volbeat? Currently my party when going into a safari is two Volbeats with Illumise, and a lvl 100 Smeargle that has all my capture moves (ie. False Swipe, Spore, Mean Look, etc.) and I've honestly encountered zero shinies. I've sat here today trying it, no repels, toddling around on my bike, changing safaris every 15 minutes-ish... I managed to go through two entire series of old QI episodes with no luck at all. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
