What kind of team do you want to build and what tier is it for?
In general, the best way to learn competitive battling is to get experience through battling other people so that you can try different things to see how well they work and take note of strategies your opponents use that work well. Battle simulators like Showdown and Pokemon Online can make the learning process easier because you can build teams faster (than in game) and have more battles against opponents who mostly have at least some competitive experience already. Smogon has listings of several common movesets for various Pokemon (although they probably still haven't fully updated Gen. 6 yet), and Bulbapedia and Serbii can be helpful resources for learning about Pokemon, abilities, items, and moves you may not already be familiar with.

Just build around Pokémon you like, and definitely use showdown to test different move sets and EV spreads.
