I say always go for some of your favorite Pokémon. What's the fun if you can't use the ones you like the most? :)
Aside from that, I believe type coverage is key. Use Pokémon that vary in type as well as types of moves.
I'll show you what I use just as an example. I'm sort of outing my team here, but whatever :P This is the team I always use in Battle Spot:
Weavile Dark/Ice - Swords Dance - Brick Break - Icicle Crash - Night Slash
Arcanine Fire - Extremespeed - Wild Charge - Close Combat - Flare Blitz
Mega Lucario Fighting/Steel - Extremespeed - Stone Edge - Blaze Kick - Close Combat
It doesn't cover every possibility, but I win most of my battles with this team.
Weavile, with his Dark and Ice STAB moves, can hit Dragon, Psychic, Ghost, and Grass for x2 damage and most other things for x1 damage. SD for extra attack (if I can fit it in) and Brick Break to take out Rock and Steel threats.
I try to make up for Arcanine's lack of multiple typing in its moveset. Flare Blitz for devastating STAB, Wild Charge to eliminate most Water-type threats, Close Combat to take out Normal- and Rock-types, and Extremespeed to hit hard with priority.
Mega Lucario is scary in its own right, but I throw in Stone Edge to eliminate most Fire and Flying threats and Blaze Kick to off the occasional Grass or Ice types (if Arcanine has fainted by this point...I usually save Lucario for last). And, of course, Close Combat for devastating STAB and Extremespeed to pick off weakened opponents.
Point is, I feel like you should try and get as much type coverage as possible while sticking to your Pokémons' strengths. Personally, I EV trained these 3 and, as I said, I usually win (not always, of course!). I would highly recommend EV training if you don't already as it is (to me, at least) more approachable than Super Training and you have complete control over your Pokémon's stats.
At any rate, just think about which Pokémon you most love and tailor their movesets from there. :) Hope that helped!

I know it sounds crazy but the only one I fell like I must have is Gengar! I have him with Venoshock, Dazzling gleam, dark pulse, and shadow ball. He is also IV and EV'd. I have a bunch of others but they are in Gen 5 so I am looking for fun suggestions. But thanks for the tips!

Well, since it seems like you already had in mind a lot of the things I said... :P
Protean Greninja is a good choice, I see many people using those. Check out some of the other Mega Pokémon. I don't know if you're using Gengarite on your Gengar and, if so, I'm also not sure if you adhere to Smogon's tiers and banlist, but Mega Gengar has been quickbanned for the time being. If that affects your strategy, I'd suggest looking into Mega Lucario, Tyranitar, Gyarados..I don't know, haha, I'm just spewing suggestions. :P
Maybe Mega Chlorophyll Venasaur is an option...I'm working on breeding a Timid Chlorophyll Bulbasaur myself. I figure I can set up Sunny Day, switch Venasaur in, and sweep with Solar Beam or Mega Drain or something. Just an idea!

I like mega Gengar and they can't stop me! :) Is protean a hidden ability?
