Well, start by building yourself a team! It'll be easier for everybody to give you tips if you let us know what you wanna try and work with. Check out Smogon University, they're a great competitive battling site!

This may not be the best advice, but if you can... try playing though Pokémon Stadium 1 or 2.
If you're really that new to competitive battling and know NOTHING about it, returning to Gen 1 where the mechanics are a lot more simple but still forces you to think and understand to to progress, you'll learn what you need to know to get you though some battles.
That's just how I got into competitive personally. I even looked up what was "OU" in Gen 1, made those Pokémon in game and took on the NPCs in Stadium, and trust me, it can get hard at times!

I'm still convinced that some of the matches in Stadium fudged game mechanics to make certain strategies work better. The OHKO moves that the Gambler in Prime Cup uses seem like they have 95% accuracy sometimes.
