I remember actually facing Missingno when I glitched the game out trying to make some sort of infinite Safari game or something, I don't even know :s Have any of you guys had encounters with it?

I caught one on purpose, used it for a bit, then got rid of it (I got scared that it would corrupt my game).

I heard that the "corrupts your game" is just to scare you away from keeping it. I know it corrupts some of the pokemon info, messes with some code of pokemon, but supposedly, it fixes the visual glitches when you release it. I can't confirm nor deny this, I'm trying to do it on an emulator. (I lost my copy and hate myself for it.).

It won't corrupt your game; it can only mess up the graphics every so often and how the Hall of Fame looks because there's no data for a Pokemon called "Missingno". Has anyone else gotten a flying Kangaskhan from evolving an M? :3

I'm still trying to remember, I studied missingno. like a school subject, except I actually enjoyed it and payed attention.) which would have a low chance of corrupting another section of seperate data where the save is held.

Since the programmers had to use a byte to store the variables referring to Pokemon, and there's only 151 legit Pokemon, that left quite a few slots empty, which is where Missingno "resides." But you're right--most of the glitches, including the Missingno glitch, happen because of data overflows/memory allocation issues.

I believe that missingno wasn't just extra data, but also a failsafe so the game doesn't totally break, where it is just some random data for the purpouse of handling errored pokemon data or missing pokemon data.
